WEDNESDAY: McCain announces he is suspending his campaign and will not debate Friday unless a bailout agreement is reached. He urges Obama to do the same. Obama says he called McCain about issuing a joint statement on the bailout earlier and will go on with the debate.
THURSDAY: Obama, McCain and other leaders meet at the White House with President Bush. The meeting includes heated exchanges, according to reports, particularly with conservative Republicans who do not support the plan and subsequently make their own proposal.
FRIDAY: Parties involved, including conservative Republicans who said they wouldn't participate, renew negotiations toward a bailout plan. McCain says there is "significant progress" toward an agreement and he will restart his campaign and participate in the debate that night.
