THE DIFFERENCE: Lennard quarterback Andrew Burdick threw for three touchdowns on tosses of 46, 6 and 26 yards to lead the Longhorns (3-1, 1-0) to a Class 2A-District 5 win at St. Petersburg. Burdick took advantage of St. Petersburg Catholic (0-4, 0-1) by using a Cover-3 defense with its cornerbacks playing deep. The senior Lennard quarterback threw for 162 yards, completing 10 of 17 passes.
GAME NOTES: The host Barons made a curious decision late in the first half that may have cost them the game. With 4:46 left in the second quarter, trailing 7-6, SPC had a fourth down on its own 39-yard line and needing four yards for a first down. The Barons decided to go for it and failed. The Longhorns quickly made them pay. A 33-yard Burdick pass to Enoch Edouard set up Burdick's six-yard score to Branson Stephens.
STAT OF THE GAME: St. Petersburg Catholic was penalized only three times for 25 yards.
QUOTE OF THE GAME: "Oh, no. Here we go again." - Burdick after he dropped the ball while looking downfield. The ball was recovered by the Barons on the Lennard 25-yard line with 29 seconds left in the second quarter. Longhorns safety Blake Kennedy bailed out Burdick on the next play by picking off a Barons pass on the Lennard 4.
