Published: September 28, 2008

RALEIGH, N.C. - University of South Florida All-American DE George Selvie did not play at N.C. State on Saturday, ending his streak of 30 consecutive starts.

A junior, Selvie had started every game of his USF career. He did not play because of a right ankle injury, suffered in the third quarter last week at Florida International. Replacing Selvie in the lineup was sophomore Craig Marshall, who made his first start.

Two others starters - NT Terrell McClain (ankle) and K Justin Teachey (thigh) - also did not play. Sampson Genus started for McClain, while P Delbert Alvarado handled the kickoff duties for Teachey.

GROTHE RED-HOT: USF QB Matt Grothe completed his first 11 passes until throwing one away in the second quarter.

Grothe's 11 consecutive completions for 148 yards to open the game exceeded his yards passing last week at Florida International (136 yards, 14-of-22).

HONORARY CAPTAIN: Senior LB Brouce Mompremier, who injured his neck last week at Florida International, was one of USF's four senior captains.

Mompremier wore his No. 53 jersey, but is out indefinitely with his injury.

"I should be back by Syracuse on Oct. 18, but I'm not rushing it," Mompremier said. "It felt good to be with the guys."

Mompremier was honored as USF's first game captain in program history who did not play in the game.

The other captains were LB Tyrone McKenzie, C Jake Griffin and WR Taurus Johnson.

RARE ROAD WIN: USF improved to 4-11 on the road or at neutral sites against nonconference BCS foes. The Bulls' only other nonconference BCS road wins: Pittsburgh (2001), North Carolina (2006) and Auburn (2007).

SAFETY FIRST: USF scored on a pair of safeties for the first time in school history.

The first came with 10:38 remaining in the second quarter when N.C. State's center snapped it over P Bradley Pierson's head and Pierson fell on it in the end zone.

On N.C. State's next possession, another center snap sailed over QB Harrison Beck's head and he kicked it through the end zone for another safety.

USF had recorded one safety in a game five times, but never two in the same game.

ODDS AND ENDS: USF WR Colby Erskin, who had not played in a game since 2006 after suffering two torn ACLs, got into the game in the fourth quarter. ... For the third consecutive game, USF's defense started its nickel package, with Danny Verpaele at strong safety and Carlton Williams at nickel back. Williams left in the third quarter with an undisclosed injury. ... Marshall recorded his second career sack in the first half and his first career interception in the second quarter. ... N.C. State linebackers coach Andy McCollum, who joined the Wolfpack staff last season, was head coach at Middle Tennessee in 2000, when the Bulls lost to the Blue Raiders 45-9. ... In Beck's five career starts, he has thrown nine interceptions and no TDs. ... CB Theo Wilson (knee) did not return in the second half.
