2 State Finance Managers Resign After Critical Audit

TALLAHASSEE - Two top executives in the state's Department of Financial Services have been forced out after an audit that was critical of the agency's internal controls.

Doug Darling, chief of the Division of Accounting and Auditing, and Herb Fillyaw, chief of the Division of Information Systems, were asked to resign Thursday.

"We lost confidence in abilities of these managers to do what needed to be done," Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink said Friday. "We felt we needed new leadership."

The departures coincided with the findings in an audit by Deloitte & Touche released Friday.

Sink asked for the audit after an alleged scheme was uncovered last month to defraud the state of millions of dollars.

Sink promoted Kimberly McMurray to replace Darling and named Craig Vollertsen as interim director of the Division of Information Systems. McMurray had been bureau chief of funds management in the Florida Treasury.
