Mercy Stops Berkeley Prep

TAMPA - Once the Berkeley Prep girls volleyball team reached the final of its annual Berkeley Premier tournament Saturday, it learned what so many other Louisville (Ky.) Mercy Academy opponents already know - there's no shame in falling short against the Jaguars.

Especially considering the incredible run the Bucs enjoyed during the two-day event.

Berkeley Prep (15-1) upset Plant, which took third-place in the tournament, and Orlando Lake Highland Prep, which defeated the Bucs in the state tournament the past three seasons, before the Bucs lost in straight sets in the final to Mercy Academy, 25-16, 25-14, 25-19.

"From the get-go, we just got in a flow and continued that with the huge win against Plant and, dare I say, an even bigger win against Lake Highland," Berkeley Prep coach Randy Dagostino said. "They're a class act and are very well-coached."

Mercy made quick work of the Bucs thanks to a game-ending 14-5 blitz in Game 2 and an early 6-1 run in Game 3.

This is the fourth time the Jaguars have played in, and won, the tournament.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Casey Garvey, Paige Wessel and Kelsey Anderson (Mercy Academy), MVP Lindsay Young, Mackenzie Dagostino and Christina Theofilos (Berkeley Prep), Ali McCurdy and Danielle Erb (Plant), Christine Pinder (Gainesville Buchholz), Krissy Mussenden and Megan Gaughn (Lake Highland Prep), Lauren Busing (Johns Creek, Ga., Northview) and Dorothy Rahal (Venice).
