A Lakeland man taken to a hospital after his arrest Tuesday morning tried to escape, but he was rearrested after being found on hospital property, Polk County deputies say.
Gary Lamar Gilileo, 21, was arrested Tuesday on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine after deputies say they found a baggie containing a powdery substance in his pocket.
Jail staff wouldn't book Gilileo because he was agitated, he was sweating and his eyes were dilated, deputies say.
He was taken to Bartow Regional Medical Center.
About 7:30 a.m., he struggled with a detention deputy at the hospital and fled from his hospital room, deputies say.
Deputies and Bartow police worked to rearrest Gilileo.
After a nurse spotted Gilileoon the north side of the building, a Bartow police canine named T-Bo and his handler, Officer Tommy Stokes, caught up with the man in a nearby retention pond, deputies say.
From start to finish, the failed escape attempt took about 45 minutes, sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said.
Additional charges including escape and resisting arrest with violence are pending against Gilileo, she said.
