TAMPA - The agency that runs the Selmon Crosstown Expressway is giving away coupons for free SunPass Mini transponders, the windshield stickers used at toll booth express lanes, and $5 worth of free tolls.
"We want our cash-paying users to get used to the electronic form of payment," expressway spokeswoman Sue Chrzan said.
The giveaway is meant to get motorists ready for July 2010, when the 15-mile toll road goes cashless at toll plazas. The coupons will be given out today at the two main plazas and only 500 SunPass stickers will be available, Chrzan said.
The Tampa-Hillsborough County Expressway Authority hit on the idea from its counterpart in Orlando, which hands out coupons.
Chrzan said the giveaway focuses on existing customers. Of the Crosstown's 40,000 daily users, about 30 percent pay in cash. The rest use the Toll-by-Tag program or SunPass transponders, which come as stickers or as a wallet-sized plastic boxes.
Folks can redeem the coupons at www.selmonexpressway.com. The Web sites asks customers to fill out a mailing address and coupon code, either "EP" for East Toll Plaza or "WP" for West Toll Plaza. The stickers, which come with $4.99 in free tolls, will be mailed out in a week or two.
About 300 had signed up for the stickers by 11 a.m., Chrzan said.
She wasn't sure whether the authority will hold additional giveaways in the future. "It depends on how this one goes."
The authority will spend about $4,700 on the effort, she said.
