A Bradenton man punched and choked a sheriff's dog this morning, Manatee County deputies said.
The incident began about 1 a.m. when deputies stopped a stolen vehicle. Henry Sailes, 41, of 3310 Fifth St. E., ran from the vehicle, deputies say. Sailes was found with the help of an aviation unit.
Sailes refused to surrender and attacked the dog, Pino, the sheriff's office said. Pino was cut above the left eye but didn't require medical attention.
The charges against Sailes include battery on a police dog, resisting arrest without violence and violating probation.
The attack on Pino comes about a week after a Citrus County sheriff's dog was stabbed in the line of duty.
Mito, a 5-year-old German shepherd, was injured while trying to apprehend a man who brandished a large knife at deputies in Crystal River on March 23.
The suspect was shot and killed by a deputy after refusing to drop his weapon, the Citrus sheriff's office said.
Mito is expected to make a complete recovery.
