The 4-year-old girl who fell through an opening in the bleachers of Jefferson High at Tuesday's Vernon Korhn Hillsborough County Track and Field Championships suffered lacerations and bruised lungs, but is otherwise doing well, her parents said Wednesday afternoon.
Melania Szawranskyj tumbled through the bleachers on the visitor's side of Jefferson's football stadium around 2 p.m. Tuesday. She was there with her mother, Solvi Szawranskyj, and sisters to watch Sean Watson of Brandon compete. Sean Watson is Melania's brother and Solvi's son.
After falling about 15 feet to the asphalt and laying motionless several minutes on the ground, it was initially feared Melania was seriously injured. But she soon had control of her extreminities and was able to speak with people around. Paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes and transported her to St. Joesph's Hospital.
Solvi, a former Norwegian champion in the javelin and ex-University of Florida all-American, said Melania underwent extensive scans and X-rays. After spending the night at St. Joseph's Hospital, Melania was diagnosed with bruised lungs but no broken bones or any serious head injuries.
