TALLAHASSEE - The more than 1.8 million Floridians on food stamps are getting an increase in their monthly benefits, thanks to the federal economic stimulus package.
Starting Wednesday, the benefits will go up $20 to $24 per person.
Florida has seen a 31 percent increase in the number of people on food stamps, compared to a year ago. The recipients are generally low-income families with children, as well as seniors and people with disabilities.
Officials expect the additional $34 million in state food stamp funding to generate $63 million in economic activity.
