Durant Girls Seeking Top Seed

Published: April 1, 2009

TAMPA - Two years ago, Durant's girls tennis team lacked enough participants to field a full squad. Because of down numbers, the Cougars were forced to default their No. 5 singles matches.

Now Durant, boasting a full and talented squad, is one of the few unbeaten teams in the county.

Playing without No. 1 singles player and Ohio State-bound Kara Cecil, the Cougars improved to 7-0 with a victory against Spoto on Thursday.

With Cecil and Jane Nappi leading the way, Durant likely will lock up the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A-District 6 tournament.

Durant concludes the regular season Thursday with a district match against Riverview.

WILDCATS ROLLING: Wharton's boys improved to 10-0 with a 6-1 victory against Plant (9-2) on Monday and have locked up the No. 1 seed in the Class 3A-District 9 tournament.

Newsome joined the ranks of the teams that have fallen to the defending Class 3A state champions when the Wildcats swept them Thursday. Now, Brandon is the latest to take a shot at Wharton.

The Eagles are 9-3, with losses to Newsome, Hillsborough and Plant City and face the Wildcats on Thursday. Brandon is led by No. 1 singles player Josh Schleif, who is 8-3.

NET POINTS: With a victory against Blake on Thursday, Plant City's boys team can wrap up the season with a 12-2 record. Not a bad way to enter the Class 4A-District 6 tournament. The Raiders have established themselves as one of the teams to beat in that district, which also includes Bloomingdale, Durant, East Bay, Lakeland, Sarasota Riverview and Sarasota. ... Defending Class 2A-District 10 champion Meghan Sullivan looked on track to retain her title with a singles victory against Academy of the Holy Names on Monday. The Crusaders took advantage of the Jaguars' youth by winning three of the five singles matches and both doubles for a 5-2 victory.
