Ruskin Chamber Grand Slam Sure To Reel In Anglers

RUSKIN - Anglers of all ages are invited to vie for some nifty prizes and bragging rights in the first Ruskin Chamber Catch & Release Grand Slam.

Taking place April 18 on the waters of Tampa Bay, the fun begins with lines in the water at 7 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. A $30-per-angler registration fee includes a light breakfast, awards ceremony and a build-your-own-burger casual dinner at Little Harbor's Captain's Quarters.

Fishing gear, gift certificates and other prizes will be awarded for the largest snook, redfish or trout. Those willing to pay an additional $10 will also vie for the grand prize, the total of the cash pool, by catching a grand slam - a snook, redfish and trout - with the highest inch-count.

"It's like a tournament within a tournament," said Matt Morrison, tournament committee chairman and charter boat captain. "We want to make this the premier fishing event in South Shore."

Anglers will receive designated measuring sticks to use recording the size of their catches, which must be photographed via digital camera or camera phone to qualify as entries. Boats may leave from anywhere but must report back to Little Harbor.

"This is going to be a fun, family event for anyone interested in fishing," Morrison said. "We're expecting 50 to 100 participants."

There will be a captains' meeting at 6 p.m. April 17 at Pirate's Point Resort, 1800 Kofresi Court, off Shell Point Road near the Fish House in Ruskin. For directions, call (813) 641-2052. The gathering includes a hog roast, drink tickets and goody bags.

Morrison said various levels of sponsorship remain available from $150 to $750. Proceeds go to the Ruskin Chamber of Commerce.
