NEW PORT RICHEY - Victor Miller should have returned the money, authorities say.
On March 2, he went into the Wachovia Bank at 6604 Massachusetts Ave. to cash a $500 check. But a bank teller's mistake led to his leaving the bank with $5,000.
When the bank called Miller about the mistake, he denied receiving extra money, according to a police report. Miller, 41, of 6903 Forest Ave., didn't respond to further phone calls or a certified letter from the bank.
On Tuesday, he was arrested on a grand theft charge while in custody on unrelated charges. He remained in custody today with a total bail of $6,400.
In an interview with investigators, Miller said he has been a drug addict for 10 years, the report states. He admitted to taking the extra $4,500 but said he didn't realize it until after leaving the bank.
Miller said he wanted to return the money but that it was stolen shortly after he received it, the report states.
