GENEVA - From spring-loaded high heels to a watch that shoots pepper spray, there was no shortage of ideas at the world's largest inventors' convention Wednesday despite a global economic downturn and fewer potential customers.
One of the most creative minds at the 37th annual International Exhibition of Inventions was a 10-year-old girl from Saudi Arabia with an electronic device to protect infants from sudden death while sleeping.
Rada Al-Khlifi of Saudi Arabia devised a small transmitter placed on a baby's chest that sends signals to a hand-size receiver carried by the parent. If the child's heartbeat becomes irregular, it chokes or makes some sudden movement, an alarm goes off in the receiver, which can be as much as 18 miles away.
The fair features 700 inventors from 45 countries and runs through Sunday. Creations range from heavy-duty engineering equipment to wacky devices like the shock-absorbing high-heels for women.
