Henson Heads Awards Recipients

On the same day he scored 14 points in the McDonald's All-American game, John Henson of Sickles was named the Paul Straub Player of the Year at the annual Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association banquet. King coach Sam Lanier, who guided the Lions to their first state tournament appearance, was given the Doug Walker Coach of The Year award and King was named Team of the Year.

Other awards recipients included Lennard senior Byron Jenkins taking home the Heart of a Champion Award and former Berkeley Prep, Plant and University of South Florida coach Fred Lowe receiving the Meritorious Service Award.

Hillsborough High boys basketball coach Andre Lewis was given The Tampa Tribune's William Bethel Award, named after the former Middleton coach, which goes to the coach who exceeded expectations given the level of talent on a team. In two seasons as coach, Lewis transformed a program that won just two games in 2006 to a district title team that reached the Class 5A region semifinals this past season.
South Florida men's basketball coach Stan Heath was the guest speaker at the banquet.

MORE BASKETBALL: Freedom is searching for a boys and girls varsity head coach. The boys team finished 5-19 under coach Randy Grenon this past season while the girls were 6-15 under coach Jason Herring. Freedom competes in Class 5A-District 8.

VOLLEYBALL: Danielle MacDonald-Leffler has been named the new varsity volleyball coach at Bloomingdale, athletic director Danielle Shotwell announced Wednesday.

Leffler replaces longtime coach Bonnie Hess, who was forced to resign months ago. The Bulls went 7-10 last season and are two years removed from playing in the Class 5A region championship.

TRACK: Sickles senior Derek Wehunt, who recently clocked the third-fastest 3,200-meter run in Hillsborough County history and the 22nd best ever in Florida, has accepted an offer to compete in this month's Arcadia Invitational in Los Angeles.

Wehunt will race in the prestigious meet's seeded section of the 3,200 on April 11. The meet, which has been run for the past 40 years, will pick up his air fare to Los Angeles while Wehunt pays his own room and board.
