Hit Hard Without Violence

Published: April 3, 2009

I am a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, where winning is not just the best thing, but the only thing, as it should be for the military. I was a Navy fighter pilot flying off carriers. We never believed in coming in second.

I was a Navy chaplain for 25 years, ending up as a senior chaplain at the Naval Academy. And I was chaplain there during the great years of football with Roger Staubach.

I'm a football fan. When I came to Tampa in 1982 to be pastor at Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church, I became, and remain, a strong Bucs fan.

My concern has to do with several recent articles about making our Bucs' team more competitive, aggressive, physical and violent. I have no problem with the first three. That's football. It's a tough game. But violent? We don't need that. I have seen violence on the gridiron and I abhor it. I've seen careers and lives snuffed out because of needless violence in sports. Let's get tough and play hard and aggressive, but leave the violence for the war zones.
