NEWARK, N.J. - Lightning rookie Steven Stamkos scored his 21st goal of the season Friday in New Jersey, tying the franchise rookie record for goals scored in a season set by Brad Richards in 2000-01. Stamkos needs one more in the final four games to break the team record.
With Tampa Bay on the power play, Stamkos set up inside the left circle and fired a one-timer on a pass from Marty St. Louis at the 4:35 mark of the second period. The goal came against all-time NHL wins leader Martin Brodeur, who entered the game in relief of injured Kevin Weekes 57 seconds into the second period. Stamkos' goal gave Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead over playoff-bound New Jersey.
With 21 goals on the season, Stamkos moves into a tie for third among all rookies with St. Louis' Patrik Berglund and Chicago's Kris Versteeg. With nine power play goals on the season, Stamkos also moves into a tie for second among rookies with James Neal of Dallas and Kyle Okposo of the New York Islanders.
Stamkos has 17 goals since Jan. 13.
