ENGLEWOOD - One man was killed and another airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg after a two-seater experimental aircraft crashed Saturday in an open area near Paul Morris Industrial Park, officials said.
The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. at the dead-end of Paul Morris Drive.
Pilot Donald James Gayner, 68, of Englewood died at the scene. Passenger Jeff Kramer, 47, of Grove City is in serious condition.
"They didn't hit anything on the ground, but it did start a small fire," said Kirk Gaskell, assistant chief of Englewood Area Fire Control District.
Sarasota County sheriff's deputies, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
