TAMPA - In the weeklong Saladino Tournament, a team's success has often come down to having fresh arms in the later rounds. Saturday at the University of Tampa, Brooks-DeBartolo sophomore pitcher Javier Reynoso went a long way to keep the Phoenix bullpen fresh. Actually, Reynoso went the whole way.
Reynoso allowed one run on one hit as Brooks-DeBartolo (12-4) defeated Spoto (9-7) 2-1.
Reynoso stayed calm and withstood three errors behind him to strike out eight, including three of the last four he faced. Phoenix coach Donnie Oliver said his hurler was confident throughout the game and wanted to stay in.
"That's all we've done all season and if we feel they can still get outs we'll let them," Oliver said. "Javier has been one of our best all season and he kept saying, 'Let me go. Let me go.'"
The Phoenix stuck to what has worked all season - aggressive base running. Brooks-DeBartolo went into Saturday's game with 129 stolen bases and added six. Senior center fielder Reggie Williams reached in the first inning after being hit with the game's first pitch, then stole second base and eventually scored after two throwing errors. Williams leads the Phoenix in steals this season with 44.
HILLSBOROUGH 7, KING 5: The Terriers capitalized on seven walks and three hits in the second and third innings to score all seven runs.
The Terriers got a big lift in their five-run third inning on a two-run single by Marlon Mitchell.
GAITHER 6, WESLEY CHAPEL 0: Starting Gaither pitcher Alex Milne went four innings, allowing Wesley Chapel's only hit while striking out seven.
The Cowboys got all they needed on a solo homer by Mike Danner in the first.
ARMWOOD 1, MIDDLETON 0: Armwood's Robert Benincasa and Middleton's Seth Jorden didn't disappoint.
Both allowed only one hit through the first five innings, before the Hawks were able to get to Jorden. In the sixth inning with two outs, Zack Powers doubled over third base and was driven in by a Joe Cartwright single up the middle. Benincasa allowed a second Tigers hit in the seventh to Andre Gunn but little else, earning the win.
