Plant City Surprises Plant 7-6

RIVERVIEW - Plant City might be the surprise team in the 29th annual Saladino Tournament.

Junior Kyle Madill went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored, while junior pitcher Jonathan Alvarez pitched a complete game to give Plant City a 7-6 upset against Plant on Saturday.

The Raiders (6-10) scored five runs in the third inning to take a 7-2 lead and weathered a late comeback by the Panthers (12-5).

Alvarez (1-0) allowed six hits, three of which were home runs, six runs and struck out two with two walks.

Graham Ramos went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs to lead Plant. Senior shortstop Mychal Givens hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Ramos hit his second homer of the night in the seventh to close the deficit to 7-6.

The record for home runs in the tournament is three.

LENNARD 7, JEFFERSON 6: Senior Austin Berberat pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and four walks while allowing seven hits to give Lennard (1-11) its first win of the season.

Brandon Beddow had two hits, which included a home run, along with two RBIs, while Blake Kennedy had one hit and three RBIs.

Chad Taylor went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI to lead Jefferson (8-9).

DURANT 14, RIVERVIEW 2: Former Jefferson standout Butch Valdes earned his first Saladino win as a coach when his Cougars topped Riverview. In the top of the fifth inning, Durant broke a 1-1 tie, scoring six runs off seven hits and one error. The Cougars (10-6) extended their lead with six runs in the top of the seventh. Durant finished with 18 hits

"The whole team was playing well today," Valdes said.

Senior Adam Albers (1-1) allowed three hits and one earned run through five innings to earn the win.

WHARTON 7, NEWSOME 5: Senior Gabriel Collazo went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Steven Christiansen added a home run to lead the Wildcats (8-7).

Cory Nelson allowed one hit and one run with one strikeout to pick up the win.

Kyle Copack went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Wolves (7-9).
