BRANDON - Defending Saladino champion Brandon moved one step closer Monday night to defending its title in the playoff round of the 29th annual Saladino Tournament.
Cory Schools allowed one run on four hits while striking out three in five quality innings, and the Eagles offense provided some clutch hits in a 5-1 victory over Sickles.
"We're starting to find some rhythm," Brandon coach Matt Stallbaumer said.
Derek Dungan put Brandon ahead 3-1 with a two-run single in the second, a hit that took advantage of two Gryphons errors that kept the inning alive. The Eagles came through again in the fifth, when Chris Toney lined a two-run single after Gryphons starter Gregg Cooke hit consecutive batters to start the inning.
Josh Dunn singled home Chase Wilcocks (2-for-3) for Sickles' lone run in the first.
