TAMPA The Tampa Catholic softball team reached new heights against district rival Academy of the Holy Names on Tuesday.
For the first time in seven years, the Crusaders swept the Jaguars in regular-season play, winning 8-1 at their home field.
With the win, Tampa Catholic improved to 8-2 in district play and 14-2 overall, its best record in more than four years. The Crusaders also clinched the second seed in the Class 3A-District 11 tournament.
TC scored eight runs on eight hits and scored in every inning except the sixth. Junior shortstop Kathryn Spack and junior third baseman Tarah Revels had two hits and two runs each, while junior second baseman Christina Martinez hit a two-run single in the third to give her team a 4-0 lead.
Freshman Tory Bohonan (9-1) allowed six hits and one run and struck out three to earn the win.
"The girls came out and were patient and aggressive when they needed to be," said Tampa Catholic coach Vernon Tatum, whose team is riding a nine-game win streak. "They sacrificed to move runners over and swung away when they had to."
Senior center fielder Alex Valdes led Holy Names (8-10, 4-6) with two hits. Christina Gerecke scored the team's lone run in the fourth inning.
Junior pitcher Lindsey Krenn (7-8) struck out four and walked four in the loss.
