AUBURNDALE - International Paper Co. has announced it is shutting down its Auburndale box plant on June 2.
The closing of the more than 50-year-old plant will leave 96 employees out of work.
Company officials are negotiating with union representatives to establish employee severance and benefits packages.
Mark Bullard, plant general manager, said it's been a difficult few days. "It's just disappointing to stand in front of people and tell them you have to close their plant. It's really hard," he said.
International Paper will continue to run box plants in Tampa, Plant City and Lake Wales.
