BRANDON - The Brandon Eagles will get a chance to defend their title when the playoff round in the 29th annual Saladino Tournament begins today.
Brandon secured a quarterfinal berth with Tuesday night's 8-2 victory over Robinson, a win that gave the Eagles the Eastern division crown.
"One at a time," Brandon coach Matt Stallbaumer said. "That's our M.O., just like last year."
Freshman right-hander Chris Toney tossed four shutout innings in the start, Spencer Haynes had two hits, an RBI and scored once, Derek Dungan scored twice and had an RBI single, and Spencer Dewey lined a two-run single in a four-run sixth that helped the Eagles put the game away.
Dustin Traina went 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run, and Neal Cota went 2-for-3 and scored once to lead the Knights.
ALONSO 12, TAMPA BAY TECH 1
The Ravens captured the Atlantic division crown with a convincing win in a game-shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.
Tyler Ding went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, three runs scored and three stolen bases, Chris Mejia went 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored once, and Thomas Dorminy had a three-run triple in a four-run fourth that helped Alonso put the game away.
Junior left-hander Brandon Johnson went the distance for the Ravens, allowing six hits while striking out six. Travis Porter went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Titans.
FREEDOM 11, EAST BAY 8
Dane Moore went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Parker Pope went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to help the Patriots defeat the Indians.
Sean Marrero also had two hits for Freedom, and Dave Seward added a two-run single in a three-run fourth that gave the Patriots an 8-2 lead.
J.T. Jones had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice, and Zach Turner and James McDonald each drove in two runs for East Bay.
SICKLES 8, BLAKE 1
Senior right-hander Sid Ishee scattered four hits while striking out eight in a complete game to lead the Gryphons past the Yellow Jackets. Sam Machonis went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Josh Dunn went 2-for-4 and scored once and Mike Sciortino had two RBIs for Sickles. Anderson Garcia went 2-for-3 for Blake.
