Youssef Megahed is being held in the Glades County Jail in south central Florida as he awaits proceedings in his immigration case, his brother said today.
Youssef Megahed called his family Tuesday afternoon but could speak only for a minute because he didn't have money to make the call, said Yahia Megahed, who traveled to Miami with his parents today to meet with an immigration attorney to discuss his brother's case.
Yahia Megahed said they learned Youssef's whereabouts in the brief phone call. The family has been told Youssef can be moved at any time with no notice or information provided to the family.
Yahia Megahed said the family planned to try to visit Youssef today, and if that's not possible, will leave some money for him.
Youssef Megahed was arrested by immigration agents Monday, three days after a federal jury acquitted him of explosives charges. His trial attorney has said the immigration charges center on the same incident involved in the criminal trial.
Megahed, who had been free on bond since May, was originally arrested in August 2007 in South Carolina after deputies said they found pipe bombs in the trunk of the car in which he was riding with a friend, Ahmed Mohamed.
Megahed, who is from Egypt, is a legal, permanent resident, or green card holder, who has been in the U.S. more than 11 years.
