Northern rainfall won't help Bay area

Published: April 9, 2009

North Florida is facing a problem that's opposite from the rest of the state - too much water instead of too little.

Will the North Florida flooding do anything to help with our drought?

No, unfortunately none of the flooded rivers flow into West Central Florida. Of the counties affected by flooding, Levy is the closest to the Tampa Bay area.

Won't all that water help recharge the aquifer?

No, the underground flow of water in the Panhandle mainly goes south into the Gulf of Mexico. The aquifer recharge for this part of Florida comes from the Green Swamp and Polk County.

Why did North Florida flood while we're still in a drought?

A strong frontal system stalled over northern Florida and southern Georgia for three days. By the time it moved over us on Monday there was little energy left. It produced only a thin line of showers and moved over this region in a matter of hours.

When does our rainy season start?

In early to mid-June, traditionally, but it varies widely, and meteorologists are predicting a drier-than-normal spring.
