BRANDON - Alonso's Thomas Dorminy took little time helping his cause in Wednesday's Saladino Tournament quarterfinals, as the junior pitcher sent Tampa Catholic right fielder Ryan Henry running to the fence only to watch a three-run home run put the Ravens up in the first inning.
Dorminy was strong in a six-inning complete game, striking out 10 as the Ravens defeated Tampa Catholic 10-0, ending the Crusaders' 13-game winning streak.
Dorminy got out of jams in the third and fourth as Tampa Catholic left five runners on base in the two innings. He struck out two in the third with the bases loaded and struck out the side in the fourth inning.
"That's a maturity thing with him and he's been doing it all year when he gets in a pickle," Alonso coach Landy Faedo said. "He gets out of it, but he doesn't get into too many of them."
Casey Smit, who was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, said with the effectiveness of Dorminy it was easy for the offense to get going.
"It helps the team's momentum a lot," Smit said. "It gets us all fired up to hit to get ready to hit to back our pitcher up."
Junior second baseman Tyler Ding added a solo shot to right field to give the Ravens a 4-0 lead in the third.
