No salmonella found in New York pistachio plant

New York officials say they found no traces of salmonella in a Long Island pistachio processing plant whose sister company sparked a nationwide recall of the nut last week.

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker said today that inspectors received negative results on nine environmental swabs of Commack, N.Y.-based Setton International Foods and eight sample tests of company food products.

The probe was conducted in tandem with an investigation into Setton's sister firm in California, where federal food safety officials found traces of the bacteria inside the plant earlier this week.

Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella has temporarily closed after recalling more than 2 million pounds of potentially tainted nuts.

Also today, Rocky Mountain Foods Inc. recalled tubs of Whole Foods Markets roasted and salted in-shell pistachios, roasted chili lemon pistachios and raw pistachio kernels. The company said it has not received any confirmed reports of illnesses.

The recalled pistachios have been packaged under the Whole Foods Markets brand in Whole Foods Markets retail stores. For more information, consumers can call 303-371-3511, ext. 15.

Barnard Nut Company of Miami recalled its pistachios Wednesday, saying the move was a precaution based on the recall by Setton Pistachio. Barnard spokesman Abel Menendez said no illnesses have been reported.

Consumers who have purchased products such as Nuts About Florida Pistachios or La Botana de Don Pepe Pistachios with an expiration date on or before Oct. 15, 2009 should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
