Florida Highway Patrol troopers have identified the 74-year-old bicyclist struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver this morning as Herbert Eugene Silvey of Riverview.
Silvey was riding his Schwinn 12-speed bicycle on U.S. 301 just south of Riverwalk Court in Riverview about 3 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a car or truck, troopers said. The victim died at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle did not stop and is being sought by law enforcement officers. Some vehicle parts were left behind.
Two lanes of southbound U.S. 301 were shut down overnight while troopers investigated the fatal incident. The scene had been cleared and all lanes were opened by 6 a.m.
The suspect's vehicle is either silver or has silver trim, troopers said, and likely has significant front-end damage.
Anyone who sees a vehicle that matches this description is asked to call highway patrol Cpl. Robert Hinton at (813) 631-4020.
Silvey had all the proper safety equipment on his bicycle, troopers said, including a headlight and a flashing taillight. He was riding along the edge of the road when he was hit, they troopers said.
