North Carolina man dies in Pasco crash

A 53-year-old man died Friday in a crash at County Road 583 and U.S. 41 in Pasco County, troopers say.
John B. Chappell of North Carolina died at the scene of the 5:36 p.m. crash.
Chappell's Subaru rode into the intersection under a red traffic signal and attempted a U-turn, but it traveled into the path of a 1994 Chevrolet sport utility vehicle driven by 20-year-old Joseph P. Alexander of Land 'O Lakes, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release. The Chevrolet struck a utility pole, and the Subaru struck a support pillar in a gas station's parking lot.
Alexander was seriously injured and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, troopers say.
