TAMPA - Tampa International Airport patrons now can use a SunPass backed by credit card accounts at the economy parking garage and will be able to use SunPass at the main terminal garages June 9.
A "soft opening" of the SunPass system that allows quick drive-through departures has worked well in the past 21/2 weeks, with a few bugs being worked out of the system, airport director Louis Miller said.
During the first week, 8 percent of economy garage patrons used SunPass, although the airport has not begun marketing the new program, Miller said.
Airport officials announced the program last year but wanted to wait until the latest version of SunPass transponder technology was available.
After fine-tuning the system, officials are moving forward with plans to deploy the SunPass program at the main terminal in June.
Some SunPass users use cash-backed cards, but the airport garages will require the use of SunPass cards backed by a credit card.
SunPass airport parking receipts are available through e-mail messages.
