Rick Clark is a self-described geezer who is determined to never fit the stereotype.
He plans to avoid it by creating personal fitness challenges that motivate him and at the same time inspire others to give their own exercise routine a boost.
Clark, 52, of Tampa, is holding a contest at Bally Total Fitness on Hillsborough Avenue to see whether any of the gym's members can outlast him running on a treadmill. A longtime runner and certified personal trainer, he beat two recent challengers, including one who lasted more than 16 minutes at speeds of up to 10 mph before conceding.
Clark says the best part of the challenge is that he's also raising money for charity. Last month, the challenged youth athlete group Blaze Sports was the recipient of donations he received. The upcoming April 27 challenge will support the Boys and Girls Club of Tampa Bay. For information about the challenge, e-mail Clark at rick clark@tampabay.rr.com.
