Two officers were standing in the parking lot of the police station this morning at 5:30 a.m. when a man walked up to them and told them he had killed his wife.
Donald Lee Wilmore, 46, said he came home Saturday morning and found an undressed man in his apartment at 728 18th Avenue South, police spokesman Bill Proffitt said.
Wilmore told police he and his wife, Alma Joyce Pertee, argued and Wilmore choked her to death, Proffitt said. Wilmore said he then walked around the town for the whole day before deciding to turn himself into police.
Records show Wilmore and Pertee were not legally married, although Wilmore referred to her as his wife. Wilmore had previous arrests on domestic battery and false imprisonment charges involving Pertee, police said. He also had a prior arrest for failing to register as a sexual offender.
Officers found Pertee, 55, dead in the apartment. Wilmore is charged with second degree murder.
