NEW YORK - Tom Seaver enjoyed many of his greatest moments on the mound at Shea Stadium. Now, he'll help the New York Mets christen Citi Field.
The Hall of Fame right-hander is slated to throw out the ceremonial first pitch to former New York catcher Mike Piazza when the Mets open their new ballpark Monday night against San Diego.
"It should be a very exciting day," Seaver said Saturday on a conference call. "A new era."
Seaver was on hand for the closing ceremonies at Shea Stadium in September.
CUBS: Catcher Geovany Soto's sore right shoulder is feeling much better and he will test it by throwing before today's game.
If Soto isn't at least ready for backup duty by Monday's home opener, the team might have to put him on the disabled list. The Cubs are carrying only one catcher, Koyie Hill, and he's playing with an extremely sore toe after his foot was hit by a pitch Friday against Milwaukee.
PHILLIES: Placed catcher Carlos Ruiz on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique muscle in his right side.
