ST. PETERSBURG - With a sellout crowd at Tropicana Field roaring its approval, the Rays raised two championship banners on Monday night prior to their home opener against the New York Yankees.
AL East 2008 Champions.
American League 2008 Champions.
"They will always represent an unforgettable time in all of our lives," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.
A procession of Rays players and coaches carried the flags around the outfield's perimeter before stopping in left field. With assistance from the Joint Communications Support Element at MacDill Air Force Base, the banners were hoisted toward the roof, just above the "D" ring catwalk.
Some fans in the left-field bleachers reached out to touch the banners as they were lifted skyward.
"We can look at them every day," Rays left fielder Carl Crawford. "It reminds us of where we were and where we want to go again."
