In Sunday's letters to the editor, there were several addressing water conservation. None mentioned the wasted water caused by county building codes.
Most houses built in Florida are on concrete pads. The water lines are run underground, where the temperature is a constant 68 degrees from the water heater to the various locations in the house. Getting hot water to the farthest faucet can take as long as 5 minutes. At six gallons per minute, that's 30 gallons of cold water down the drain.
Turn the water off for a few minutes, and it can take another 5 minutes to get hot water back from the water heater.
The code should be changed to have the hot water lines run through the attic where, during the day, the temperature can be over 100 degrees. Instant hot water - no wasted water.
