TAMPA - Longtime Tampa radio personality and jazz buff Pat Chamburs died Sunday at age 84 at his home in St. Pete Beach after a lengthy illness.
Chamburs, a Clearwater native, worked at several area radio stations, including WFLA (970 AM), WDAE (620 AM) and WMNF (88.5 FM). He also owned a bookstore and coffeehouse near the University of Tampa. His weekly jazz show aired for 22 years on WMNF.
Chamburs was known as colorful character who lived an interesting life, said WMNF program director Randy Wynne. "He was known as a hipster and beatnik in the 1950s," Wynne said.
He was romantically linked to Lauren Hutton when she was a University of South Florida student and before she became a model and actress, according to his family and friends (including Tampa radio historian and WFLA personality Tedd Webb).
Chamburs is survived by his wife, Grace, and eight children. The family said there are no funeral plans.
