TAMPA - People looking for bargains at premium hotels in May and June might check out New York or resurrect last year's "staycation" buzzword as the Tampa Bay area's high-end hotels are among those offering discounts of 25 percent or more.
Rates at Tampa's pricier lodgings are down an average of 32 percent to $143, compared with a 27 percent decline in New York to $286, according to farecast.live.com.
San Diego, Las Vegas and Denver are among other major cities where premium hotels have trimmed rates.
Hotel prices and occupancy continue to fall in Tampa and nationwide.
The average rate per room sold in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area dropped 2.9 percent to $118.45 in February compared with a year ago. The number of rooms sold dropped 6.7 percent to 65 percent, Smith Travel Research of Hendersonville, Tenn., reported.
Nationwide, the average price of a room sold dropped 7.8 percent to $100.41 and occupancy declined 7.2 percent to 53.2 percent.
