The White House on Tuesday announced the expected appointment of Frank Sanchez of Tampa as undersecretary of commerce for international trade.
Sanchez, 49, who ran for mayor of Tampa in 2003, held two positions in the Clinton administration in the 1990s, special assistant to the president in the office of Envoy to the Americas Buddy MacKay and assistant secretary of transportation in the area of aviation policy and international negotiations.
A graduate of Florida State University law school who holds a degree in public administration from Harvard University, Sanchez has practiced law and worked in mediation and negotiations.
He was an early backer of Barack Obama in the Democratic primary for president and became Obama's top national Hispanic fundraiser.
His appointment requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
