VALRICO Plant senior and Furman University-bound pitcher Kayla Suskauer gave up one run, got herself out of two bases-loaded jams, and struck out nine batters to lead the Panthers to a 4-1 win over Bloomingdale in a non-district softball game Wednesday, spoiling the host Bulls' Senior Night.
Suskauer (10-5) allowed five hits and helped her own cause with a run scored and a double, the only extra-base hit of the game.
"That's just Kayla," Plant coach Melissa Sigmon said. "She battles and she works hard. That's what makes her successful."
Plant (18-5) scored two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Senior infielder Lizzy Mischo scored on a sac fly in the top of the seventh to make it 4-1. Florida International commit and junior outfielder Erica Arcuri had two hits, one run and a RBI, Michigan State commit and junior shortstop Sarah Bowling had two hits, and senior first baseman Courtney Kraemer had two RBIs to lead the Panthers.
Bloomingdale (18-6) scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a wild pitch. Freshman Jordan Alexander led the Bulls with two hits.
Senior pitcher Kaylyn Camacho (11-5) allowed seven hits, six runs and walked six batters in the loss.
"This was definitely a team win," Sigmon said. "We took advantage of three lead-off walks, we hit well and we bunted well."
SCHINELLA LIFTS NEWSOME: Newsome sophomore pitcher Bailey Schinella hit a game-winning, two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Wolves a come-from-behind victory over visiting Plant City, 5-4, on Wednesday.
Schinella (14-1) pitched a complete game and allowed one earned run.
