PLANT CITY - A $3.6 million project will extend reclaimed water lines to the Walden Lake golf course, South Florida Baptist Hospital and Florida Strawberry Festival grounds.
The project will deliver up to 400,000 gallons of reclaimed a day to the three large customers. The city has been looking for more users for its reclaimed water since a multimillion dollar expansion of its sewage treatment system was completed in the last few months.
The new project funded by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Plant City includes the design, permitting and construction of approximately 15,000 feet of reclaimed water transmission line from the city's water reclamation facility off Alexander Street.
The hospital will use the water in its cooling system and irrigation. The festival and golf course will use it for irrigation.
Construction is slated to begin in October 2010 and be completed in July 2011.
Steve Saffels, a city utilities coordinator, said the city is in the initial stages of design.
Reclaimed water is wastewater that has been extensively treated so it can be used for irrigation, cooling or other uses that don't require potable water.
