TAMPA - Gasoline prices in the Tampa Bay area will continue to rise as the summer vacation season, which runs from April to September, kicks off, according to a new report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Local retailers are charging $2.06 on average for a gallon of regular unleaded, up from $1.92 a month ago, according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report.
This summer, the same grade of fuel is expected to average $2.23 a gallon nationwide, the new report showed. That's 8.7 percent higher than the current national average reported Wednesday by AAA
The forecast, however, is well below last summer's average of $3.81 a gallon.
The summer forecast is based largely on lower oil prices.
Last summer, oil averaged about $100 a barrel. This summer, oil is expected to average $53 a barrel, the report said.
