RIVERVIEW - If hitting is contagious, it was certainly airborne for the Newsome softball team on Thursday night.

The Wolves scored three runs on six hits in the top of the sixth inning and went on to defeat Riverview, 3-0, in a non-district game.

Entering the sixth inning, Newsome (20-5) had registered just two hits.

"The girls just picked up their hitting," first-year Newsome coach Dawn Vanella said.

With the bases loaded and one out, senior infielder Meaghan Schultz hit a two-run single to give Newsome a 2-0 lead. Schultz then scored on a single by junior infielder Ally Ledenham.

Sophomore pitcher Bailey Schinella improved to 16-1 on the mound, allowing for hits with five strikeouts and two walks. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate.

"She is having an amazing season," Vanella said. "She's an amazing player."

Freshman Taylor McCoy and junior Krystal Holman had two hits apiece while senior pitcher Katie Gwinn (3-3) suffered the loss for Riverview.

The Sharks (12-10) had their chances. In the bottom of the sixth, Riverview had a runner on first and second with one out, but Newsome ended the inning with a double-play, a strikeout followed by a put-out at first.

"That's the slight different between where they're at and where we're at," Riverview coach Angela Slater said.
