BROOKSVILLE - A misdemeanor battery charge has been dropped against a substitute teacher accused of slapping a student, court records show.
The charge was brought against Chandra Christine Bennington after a student at Explorer K-8 told the school resource officer he was hit on March 13. Students in the classroom corroborated his statement, saying the smack was loud enough to hear.
Bennington acknowledged she made a mistake, but said the student was yelling and screaming at her. She classified the slap as more of a push on the face.
The charge was dropped on Tuesday by Assistant State Attorney Don Barbee. In a previous interview about this case, Barbee said teachers have the same rights as parents when it comes to punishing children.
He could not be reached for comment Thursday.
