The Tea Parties in downtown Tampa on Wednesday drew hundreds of people protesting the federal stimulus package. Marlene Etzler of Tampa showed up at the noon protest wearing an Uncle Sam hat and toted signs and a "Don't Tread On Me" flag. "I wanted to come here to speak out to have my voice heard," she said.
Tom Gaitens coordinated protests across the state. Events in Tampa were at noon and 5 p.m.
"The reality is that everyday citizens are so frustrated with Washington and Tallahassee," Gaitens said. "We are taxing our children - who aren't even old enough to vote - for the rest of their lives."
The protests draw from the famous Boston Tea Party in 1773, when colonists protested taxes on tea by dumping crates into Boston Harbor.
