NEW PORT RICHEY - Only 10 days shy of ruining Pasco's senior night, Mitchell made sure its was one to remember - capturing the program's third Sunshine Athletic Conference title with an 8-3 victory against visiting Zephyrhills.
"They kind of knew where we stood," Mitchell coach Scott Bisbe said. "They knew if we won, we were sole conference champs. Not only that, I said, 'Ladies, if nothing else, there's five seniors. Seniors you need to turn it on and underclassmen, don't be the one that loses the game for your seniors.'"
Those words gained traction in the fourth inning. Ciara Seymour's triple to right field scored Olivia Kline for the 1-0 lead. Cortney Radke singled to right to score Seymour, and one batter later, Courtney Dougherty laced a triple to right, driving in pinch-runner Deariann Clifton for the 3-0 advantage.
The following inning, Mitchell (17-7) collected four more runs, pushing its lead to 7-0. Another was added in the sixth.
Zephyrhills (16-7) began to make contact in the seventh when Lauren Pasquale opened the inning with a rocket double to left center field. Three batters later, Geanna Arnold's double to left scored Pasquale and Lacey Cook.
Mitchell's victory, which prevented a four-way logjam with Land O' Lakes, Pasco and River Ridge for the conference crown, resulted in the team's first title since 2007.
