LAND O' LAKES - It was senior night for Land O' Lakes on Thursday, but junior Kasey Murray stole the show.
Murray struck out 10 Hudson batters, and didn't allow a hit as Land O' Lakes defeated the Cobras 10-0 in a game that ended on the mercy rule. The Gators scored three runs in the first, three in the second, two in the fourth, and two more in the fifth, ending their regular season with the easy victory.
Samantha Adamo led the bottom of the first off for the Gators (15-2) with a triple, setting the tone for the rest of the night. The next batter, Loren Smith, drove Adamo in with a sacrifice fly before Jessica Austin hit a towering two-run homer three batters later. That was more than enough support for Murray, who helped her own cause at the plate with a double, a run and three RBIs.
"It's definitely a building point," said Gators coach Jamie Martin. "If I had to say we should turn it on anytime of the year, now is the right time. We've been building and getting better all year."
Although the Cobras (3-21) drew six walks and a hit by pitch, they couldn't get past second base all night. All they could do was watch as a two-run homer by Cristina Rosario in the fifth ended the game and their regular season.
Hudson will play Springstead in the play-in game of the Class 4A-District 8 tournament Monday at Pasco High School. Land O' Lakes earned the top seed, and the first-round bye, in the 5A-District 7 tournament and will play the winner of Ridgewood and Wesley Chapel on Tuesday at River Ridge High School.
