PALATKA - Authorities were searching Thursday for two men who escaped from a North Florida jail and were suspected of killing the 66-year-old step-grandmother of one of them and ditching her car hundreds of miles away in Kentucky.
Investigators said the car was taken from the home of Helen Googe, who was found dead hours after Wednesday's pre-dawn breakout
Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy said a nationwide alert was put out for the two men. He said they were considered suspects in the slaying and were armed and dangerous.
Doni Ray Brown, 23, of Satsuma and Timothy Wayne Fletcher, 25, of Welaka, fled the jail about 4 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said. The two shared a jail cell. How they escaped was not clear.
Later Wednesday, officers say they found the body of Googe, Fletcher's step-grandmother, and a stolen truck outside her home. Officers in Monroe County, Ky., found Googe's missing 1999 four-door Lincoln.
A Kentucky state trooper said the two were thought to be headed for Crawfordsville, Ind.
