PALATKA - Authorities say two escaped Putnam County inmates apparently used a car jack to pry open a hole in their cell and escape.
Sheriff Jeff Hardy says authorities were still looking Friday for 23-year-old Doni Ray Brown of Satsuma and 25-year-old Timothy Wayne Fletcher of Welaka. They escaped around 4 a.m. Wednesday. They're suspected of killing an elderly woman and ditching her car in Kentucky.
Hardy says investigators determined that Fletcher was able to steal a bottle jack out of a van he was in for a court appearance. The two men used the jack to pry out the toilet-sink combination in their cell and get into a maintenance chase. He says they dug their way under a perimeter fence and were able to get through another fence.
