LAKELAND - In a last-match thriller, Newsome's No. 2 doubles pair of Hunter McCampbell and Kyle Staggs gave the Wolves the Class 3A-District 10 title with a 7-6, 6-2 victory against Lakeland Jenkins' Craig Rahman and Tilman Monsanto, breaking a tie with the Eagles for a 24-23 victory.
Last year's state runner-up, Andy Hersh of Newsome defeated Jenkins' Joe Sopko 6-0, 6-3 to win the No. 1 singles and an automatic state tournament bid.
In the No. 2 bracket, Newsome's Colin Edwards lost a close match to Jonathan Nunoz of Jenkins 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Newsome would turn things around and win the rest of its finals. Staggs edged out a win against Jenkins' Aaron Stark 6-3, 6-7, 6-3; McCampbell took home the No. 4 title by defeating Raman 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Hersh and Edwards of Newsome ran away with the No. 1 doubles final, beating Jenkins' Sopko and Nunoz 6-4, 6-2.
Newsome's girls also advanced to next week's regional round, but were unable to match the boys title as Lakeland Jenkins won three of the five singles titles and advanced to both doubles finals.
Newsome advanced to all five singles finals, but were only able to win one, Brooke Prestridge winning the No. 5 singles by default. State semifinalist Andrea Arguello of Jenkins defeated Newsome's Jacquelin Watson 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles to lead the Eagles to victory.

CLASS 3A-DISTRICT 5: After a day of rain and two days of competition, a district champion still has not been determined in the boys Class 3A-District 5 tournament.
When Wesley Chapel's Stephen Diamantas defeated Matt Smith of Ridgewood to win the No. 5 singles title, it gave the Wildcats their 19th point of the tournament at River Ridge to tie Land O' Lakes for the team championship.
The two schools will play a regular team match today at Sunlake at 3:30 p.m. to break the tie. Land O' Lakes won four individual titles as freshman Colin Roller won No. 1 singles and Brandon Vang won No. 2 singles. The two paired to win No. 1 doubles and Chris Story and Donenic Dolente won No. 2 doubles. In the girls tournament, River Ridge won five of the seven titles as the Royal Knights scored 23 points to win the team title. No. 1 singles Nicola Wellman did not lose a set in her three matches. Ridgewood also advanced to Tuesday's region semifinals as the Rams finished second with 16 points.

CLASS 1A-DISTRICT 9: With Berkeley Prep having to forfeit two matches, Tampa Prep needed only two singles victories to settle the Class 1A-District 9 tiebreaker.
The Terrapins' No. 4 (Ralph Grauer) and No. 5 (Luke Davies) singles players got the necessary victories to secure the title. Berkeley Prep's No. 1 singles and doubles player Brian Shim was unable to participate in Thursday's tiebreaker at Hillsborough Community College because he was making a college visit to Dartmouth.
Tampa Prep will host the District 10 runners-up Tuesday in the 1A-Region 5 tournament, while Berkeley will travel to play the District 10 winner.
